Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited has got a big relief from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court allowed MMRCL to place an application before the concerned authority for felling of 84 trees in Mumbai’s Aarey Colony. 84 trees need to be cut to make a ramp for the train in the car shed.

New Delhi. The Supreme Court allowed the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) to place before the concerned authority an application to cut 84 trees for the construction of a ‘train ramp’ at its car shed project in Aarey Colony, Mumbai. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha took note of the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Mumbai Metro, that 84 trees need to be felled to make ramps for trains in the car shed.

The bench said that MMRCL should be permitted to place its application before the Tree Authority for felling of 84 trees. With this, the bench fixed the final hearing on the main applications against the Metro project for February next year. Earlier, the apex court had in 2019 taken suo motu cognizance of a letter addressed to the Chief Justice by law student Rishav Ranjan, seeking a stay on the felling of trees in Aarey Colony.

The apex court restrained the authorities from cutting more trees after the Solicitor General on behalf of Maharashtra gave an undertaking that no more trees would be cut. Environmentalists and residents are opposing the felling of trees in Aarey Colony.
