The illegal extraction of sand in Paraíba and Pernambuco is the target of Operation Grain of Sand, launched today (25), by the Federal Police (PF).
Actions take place in the municipalities of Pedras de Fogo, in Paraíba; and Carpina and Tracunhaém, in Pernambuco, where police officers carry out search and seizure warrants.
According to the PF, owners of clandestine sandpits extract and sell the sand for civil construction and, after the reserve is depleted, they abandon the area, leaving it completely degraded. They act without authorization from the National Mining Agency and the state environmental agency.
The practice configures crimes of illegal extraction of mineral resources and against property, for exploiting raw material belonging to the Union. The added crimes can result in up to six years in prison, informed the Federal Police.
